Monopoli, the town of three ‘c’:
Churches, Coves, Contradas

Nestled on the shore of the Adriatic sea, Monopoli is a strategic location perfect to start  discovering the surrounding wonders: the picturesque Polignano a Mare, Alberobello with its ‘trulli’ that are Unesco heritage, the Castellana Grotte Caves, Putignano well-known for its Carnival, the Itria Valley triangle (Locorotondo, Cisternino and Martina Franca), Ostuni white town and several other charming Apulian towns.

Famous as one of the most populated and dynamic ports of the region, Monopoli welcomes its tourists  in the picturesque historic center of Messapian origin imbued with history and tradition.

A few steps from the hotel, the characteristic old port opens the way to the castle of Charles V, a typical XVIth century fortress which incorporates older buildings and represents today a cultural venue standing out impressively on the sea.

Driven from the sea breeze, You can lost Yourself among the lovely alleys, strolling between noble palaces and charming little squares. Our Piazza Garibaldi stands out with Piazza Palmieri where a majestic marquis palace comes into view.

The first ‘C’ characterizing Monopoli is referred to churches, a historical, architectonical and cultural treasure unmissable for a full immersion in the cultural heritage of our land.

The historic center is plentiful of art and spirituality ranging from the tiny rupestrian churches embedded into rocks to the magnificent Baroque churches among which it emerges the grandiose XVIIth century cathedral of the Madonna della Madia. Evey year, on December 16th and August 14th, the faithful observant people meet at the port, in a sincere and profound prayer, in order to welcome the landing of the Byzantine effigy that arrived from the sea on the beams of a raft  in 1107.

It cannot be missed, furthermore, the XIIth century church of Santa Maria degli Amalfitani, adjacent to the hotel, that is the unique Romanesque style religious building in town.

Another distinctive ‘c’ distinguishing Monopoli is the presence of many small sandy inlets, called ‘cale’, lapped by a crystalline sea and weaved in the urban center. The first one and the most spellbinding is Cala Portavecchia: it offers a breathtaking panoramic glimpse of the historic center and it can be reached on foot with a few minutes’ promenade. To follow, several small free beaches and, starting from about 1 kilometer away, the firs equipped beaches until the well-known seaside area named Capitolo, located in the southern part of Monopoli, studded with countless comfortable beach clubs.

The last ‘c’ that characterizes Monopoli concerns the 99 districts that surround the urban center, everyone with its own identity and  able to astonish the visitor with the peculiar dry stone walls, the singular ‘trulli’, the amazing fortified ‘masserie’ –  imbued with history and traditions – and the elegant neoclassic patrician villas.
